. >>> anytime you leave hawaii, it is too soon. but six days before the fiscal cliff, president obama cutting short his christmas vacation on the off chance he and congress might be able to cut some kind of deal. he left. but brianna keilar is still there in honolulu. when's the president leaving and why does he really expect to avoid the cliff? >> reporter: i will be leaving as well when the president leaves, don. he is expected. he will be leaving tonight. that's local time. so he'll be traveling overnight and arriving back in the d.c. area late thursday morning. as you know, the senate reconvenes tomorrow. so he'll be going back as that is happening. we heard from him last week as he was heading out to hawaii. he said, see you next week. we had a thought that this was probably going to happen. he is officially now going back. he said last week, don, that he is still optimistic that something can get done. the other issue here, though, is you can imagine, how bad it would look if he go over the cliff and there's a lot of work to

they visited marines at a base in hawaii thanking them for their service. mrs. obama and their daughters, by the way, won't cut short their vacation. they're staying in hawaii while dad flies home. >>> a trip to a christmas party with the family took an unexpected turn for my next guest and his wife when they ran into this -- >> oh, my god, we need to go. it's right there. >> his name is david and he joins me now by phone. welcome, david. >> hello, how are you? >> pretty good. you're driving to a christmas party and you see a huge, frightening tornado in front of you. what went through your mind? >> well, the first thing was, i asked my wife to pick up the camera and start getting some footage of it because i know that local news stations and everything were wanting to see what was going on. at that point, we just kind of drove as fast as we possibly could to get out of the way. >> i was going to ask you, so did you stop for a second to shoot these pictures and then drive off as quickly as you could? >> no. we were actually on i-165 northbound when i looked over

the first lady, the girls are staying in hawaii. the senate is supposed to convene, but not necessarily the house. what is going to happen? >> reporter: well, we're not really sure. in fact, house republican leaders are having a conference call, i'm told, as we speak, to figure out that very question. they told their members that they would have 48 hours notice before they reconvene the house and so at the earliest, that would be on friday. but, you know, the action really is now going to begin in the senate. there isn't that much of a rush for the house to come back. and when i say action, even that is a question mark. whether there will be action. i was talking to a democratic source who said right now what they had to figure out, victor, is whether or not harry reid working with the white house on this can get enough votes from republicans to cross party lines for even a scaled back measure, which the president laid out in general on friday, would just be to keep americans' taxes where they are for those making $250,000 or less.

from hawaii to try to keep america from going over the fiscal cliff. as the house and senate reconvene tomorrow. the clock is ticking. six days until the deadline. the way things work in washington, can they actually get something done before the end of the year? brianna keilar, what is the latest on this? >> hi, there, drew. president obama will be heading home from hawaii tonight, logical time arri arriving in d.c. thursday morning when the senate will be reconvenin reconvening, and the senate, all eyes on now, that we look for the last-ditch effort to avoid the fiscal cliff. even though the president is returning on thursday, we may not see the senate roll out its bill to deal with the fiscal cliff. perhaps for a couple of days. this is entirely possible we've learned from sources as senate majority leader harry reid works to get republican support in the senate, which he will need if he's going to pass a bill. and so we're still waiting to see exactly what it will look like that the white house wants for the threshold on income tax rates to cut off
